How to Sow Playtcodon English Bell Flower Seeds
A beautiful perennial, which is commonly grown in gardens and homes throughout the United Kingdom. Blooming in stunning pastel pink, white and blue shades. These dwarf plants once grown, will reach a maximum height of 30-40cm. Fully established flower heads are veined, reaching a maximum size of 2 inches for each flower. Prolonged blooming periods means platycodon will flower from Summer, all the way through to Autumn. Also known as the chinese bell flower, platycodon is usually grown as ground cover, a pot or container plant or as an ornamental.
How do you Germinate Bell Flower Seeds?
- Using a seed compost which is well draining, spread seeds evenly across the surface. Only press in lightly, as platcodon seeds need light to germinate.
- If sowing indoors, start anytime. Ensuring to keep the starting pots/trays in a sunny location. If sowing outdoors, start from Jan-Apr preferably in a place with stable weather conditions, plus lots of sunlight.
- Best temperatures for germination: 12-20 degrees. Approximate germination time: 7-14 days. Keep soil moist, but not soaking as this will decrease germination.
- After 14 days, small seedlings should be present. Allow them to grow on, until reaching a height of around 7cm. After this point, they are safe to handle. Transplant to their final growing destination as desired.
- Platycodon seeds will flower in their first year, if sown early enough and ideal conditions are met. Well drained soil, will maximize germination and the growing process.
